Tax-free shopping refers to the opportunity for customers to purchase goods or services without paying any tax normally collected at retail, such as sales tax, Goods and Services Tax, value added tax, or consumption tax.
Five states in the U.S. (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon) do not impose general sales taxes at all but may have specific excise taxes on gasoline, cigarettes, alcohol, meals, etc.
Here are a few states that participated in 2011. The states without dates participated last year, but have not announced their plans for 2012.
